Data. Driven. Decisions.
I was recently looking for an apartment in the North side of Chicago. I wanted to be close to the waterfront, close to the #134 bus, close to the Brown line, and close to a grocery store. With every new place I looked at, I had to do a quick mental check of how the unit ranked against these criteria. I know I'm not the only one who goes through this process. In fact, I'm sure over the next few years, millions of young professionals will do some back of the napkin figuring just like I did.
With the turn of my employer's fiscal year in July, I was asked to select a health plan that would be best for me. Gold ($$$), Silver ($$), or Bronze ($). I looked at the Gold plan - pretty expensive. Or is it? Is someone my age susceptible to more medical expenses than I'm guessing? Which plan is right for me? I don't want to spend too much, but I also don't want to take on a bunch of risk just to save a few bucks. What's the probability that I'll slip on the ice and break my leg this year?
There's a lot of guessing that goes into our decisions every day. Some are smaller than others and for those, guessing is just fine. But for a major decision like buying a house, a car, or choosing health insurance, it might be worth taking some time and using a systematic, statistics based approach to make informed decisions.
